Gas, electric or heat pump: an honest comparison before you replace.
When a water heater fails, most people replace it with the same type they had. That is often right, but not always. A gas water heater recovers faster and costs less to run where gas rates are low, but it needs a gas line, proper venting and combustion air. An electric water heater is simpler to install and has no combustion safety concerns, but standard electric-resistance models are slow to recover and can be expensive to run. A newer option, the heat pump water heater, is electric but uses a fraction of the energy of a standard electric tank, and may qualify for rebates through our SMUD approved contractor status.
